A Day by the Ocean: Why UPF 50+ Clothing Matters

A MORNING BY THE OCEAN

It was still early when I arrived at the beach in Hendaye. The Beach was almost empty, and the first waves of the morning were rolling in. There is something special about being in the water before the day really begins, when everything feels a little slower.

Wrapped in my wetsuit, my skin was covered and protected from the sun. But as the morning turned into afternoon, I wasn't quite ready to leave. A coffee by the promenade sounded like a good idea, perhaps followed by a walk along the beach.

WHEN THE MORNING TURNS INTO AFTERNOON

By the time I stepped out of the water, the beach had come to life. The sun was high, and I could already feel its warmth on my skin. I love spending long days outdoors, but I've also become more conscious of what prolonged UV exposure can mean — from sunburn and pigmentation to long-term skin damage. That's when having an extra layer makes all the difference. Something easy to throw on, comfortable to wear and designed to protect without compromising on style.

WHAT DOES UPF 50+ ACTUALLY MEAN ?

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor and measures how much UV radiation passes through a fabric. Unlike SPF, which describes sunscreen protection, UPF refers to textiles. A fabric rated UPF 50+ blocks at least 98% of UV radiation under standard test conditions. Since not all clothing offers the same protection, fabric construction and density matter. The Halo-01 Sun Jacket is made from fabric tested to BS EN 13758-1, offering verified UPF 50+ protection. Unlike sunscreen, protective clothing doesn't need to be reapplied throughout the day — although exposed areas of skin still need sunscreen.

SUN PROTECTION THAT MOVES WITH YOU

I slipped on my Halo-01 Sun Jacket over my swimsuit and settled down for a coffee along the promenade. What I love about it is how effortlessly it fits into moments like these. Its breathable, durable fabric and back ventilation opening help air circulate, while the relaxed silhouette makes it easy to layer over swimwear or everyday outfits. The cuffs can be rolled up, and a magnetic front closure allows me to open or fasten the jacket in seconds. When the afternoon gets warmer, I can simply open it or take it off, making sure exposed skin stays protected. It's a versatile piece designed to move between the ocean, the city and everywhere in between.

MADE FOR DAYS WITHOUT A PLAN

Later that afternoon, I found myself walking along the shoreline, the ocean still sparkling in the sunlight. What started as an early surf session had turned into a full day by the sea, without much planning at all. After wearing the Halo-01 throughout the summer, I've come to appreciate how naturally it fits into those moments. A thoughtful layer to bring along, offering sun protection whenever I need it. Because the best days are often the ones we don't plan.
